Ben Johnson won the gold medal in 100m sprint in world record time at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. However the Canadian sprinter tested positive for an anabolic steroid and had his gold medal taken away. It went to American rival Carl Lewis instead.

USA's track and field athlete Marion Jones won three gold medals and two bronzes at the 2000 Sydeny Olympics. But seven years later she admitted about her use of performance-enhancing drugs during the Summer Games. For her crime she spent six months in jail and was stripped her of all five medals.

Once considered a legend in cycling, Lance Armstrong's bronze medal at the 2000 Sydney Games Olympics was taken away as a part of the fallout from his performance-enhancing drug use. The IOC vacated the medal he won in the road time trial.

Jamaica's gold in the men's 4x100 metres relay team at the the 2008 Beijing Olympics was taken away when one of the four racers, Nesta Carter, was found guilty of doping. This was a big setback for sprint legend Usain Bolt as he lost one of his nine Olympic gold medals and his perfect triple treble of Games'

Norwegian rider Tony Andre Hansen clinched bronze in team jumping at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. However his horse, Camiro, was tested positive for capsaicin. This led to Hansen and Camiro losing the medal.

In 2016, the former head of an anti-doping laboratory in Moscow confirmed Russia's state-run initiative to provide its athletes with performance-enhancing drugs at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi. As a result WADA imposed a four-year ban on Russia for the Olympic Games and world championship sporting events.

Chinese swimmer Sun Yang served a three-month ban in 2014 after testing positive for a stimulant. He was banned from competing at the Tokyo Olympics, ending his hopes of defending his Olympic title in the 200-meter freestyle.
