Born on 20 May 1983, Jr NTR is the grandson of legendary Telugu actor and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, N. T. Rama Rao. His father, Nandamuri Harikrishna, was a film actor and politician, and his mother, Shalini, hails from Karnataka.

Jr NTR made his acting debut as a child in Brahmarshi Viswamitra (1991) and later starred in Ramayanam (1997), which won the National Film Award for Best Children's Film. He debuted as a lead actor with Ninnu Choodalani (2001).
