FILMY BACKGROUND

Born in 1993, Malavika hails from a cinematic family, being the daughter of renowned cinematographer K. U. Mohanan. Over the years, Malavika has made a name for herself, working with established figures in the Malayalam and Tamil film industries.

HOW SHE ENTERED FILMS

Malavika’s entry into the film industry was serendipitous. She accompanied her father to a commercial shoot for a fairness cream, where Mammootty, the star of the ad, noticed her.

WORKING AS A  COSTUME DESIGNER

During the filming of Pattam Pole (2013), Malavika learned the nuances of acting as the shoot progressed. Due to the illness of the original costume designer, she took on the responsibility of designing her own costumes

HER FIRST KANNADA FILM

In 2016, Malavika made her Kannada film debut with Naanu Mattu Varalakshmi, opposite debutant Prithvi. Though the film had a modest release, her portrayal of Varalakshmi garnered positive reviews from critics.

HER MAJOR BREAKTHROUGH

Malavika's breakthrough came with her Hindi film debut in Majid Majidi’s Beyond the Clouds (2017). She portrayed Tara, a girl from Mumbai’s Dhobi Ghat, earning acclaim for her role as the elder sister of debutant Ishaan Khatter.

ENSEMBLE CAST TAMIL DEBUT

Malavika's Tamil debut was in Karthik Subbaraj’s Petta (2019), where she shared the screen with Rajinikanth, Vijay Sethupathi, and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. She even hired a Tamil-speaking tutor to perfect her lines.

RECENT RELEASE

Her recent work includes Pa. Ranjith’s Tamil film Thangalaan, a historical action fantasy starring Vikram. Initially scheduled for release in January 2024, it was postponed to 15 August 2024 for Independence Day.

HER HINDI DEBUT

Malavika's next big release is the Hindi action thriller Yudhra, opposite Siddhant Chaturvedi, set for release on 20 September 2024. The film also features Raghav Juyal.

HER OTT APPEARANCE

In 2020, Malavika appeared as herself in Masaba Gupta’s web series Masaba Masaba, an Indian biographical drama based on the life of the fashion designer.
