Phone, messages and FaceTime apps revamped. iOS 17 will feature quality-of-life updates for these apps, as announced at the Worldwide Developers Conference.

iOS 17, the latest smartphone operating system from Apple, will be available for eligible devices on September 18.

The update brings new features to phone, messages and FaceTime apps, such as enhanced safety, live transcription and stickers.

Posters are a new feature that lets users customise contact cards with designs and Memoji, which appear fullscreen when receiving a call.

Live transcription enables users to see real-time transcripts of voicemails and decide whether to answer or ignore them.

FaceTime now supports messages during video calls, which can be text, audio or video, and can be replied to during or after the call.

AirDrop has a new feature called NameDrop that lets users share contact information by bringing two iPhones close to each other, and also allows for continuous file downloads.

Messages have improved search filters, a Check In feature that shares live location and status, and a new sticker feature that lets users add any emoji or photo cutout as a sticker.

Stickers have been revamped with more creative options, such as live photos, effects and positioning.

Keyboard has improved autocorrect with a new language model, in-line predictive typing, sentence-level autocorrections and user-specific vocabulary learning.

Journal is a new journaling app that automatically suggests entries based on photos, music and activities, and encrypts them for privacy.

Siri has been enhanced with natural commands without the “hey” prefix, back-to-back commands and improved usability.

Enhanced safety allows users to control app permissions and get notified when apps access sensitive data.

iOS 17 follows iOS 16, which introduced a new lock screen, iMessage features such as editing and unsending messages, and Live Activities on the Dynamic Island.

iOS 17 aims to provide a more personalised and engaging user experience with various features for different needs and preferences, and will be available in September 2023.
