Caring for a baby involves many decisions, especially regarding nutrition. On CNBC-TV18’s special show "The Medicine Box," Dr. Mahesh Balsekar, Consultant Paediatrics at Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital, addressed key concerns about baby care, offering valuable insights for new parents.
According to Dr. Balsekar, formula milk is a viable alternative to breast milk for those who cannot or choose not to breastfeed, as most formula milks today have a composition similar to breast milk.
However, he emphasised that breast milk is a superior option and that babies should be exclusively breastfed for at least six months.
Dr. Balsekar advised parents to start solid foods after six months of age and around 5.5 months if the baby faces issues like reflux.
He suggested starting with vegetables such as carrots, pumpkin, and sweet potato, and including rice and moong dal khichdi for a second feed.
He added that subsequently, mashed fruit and stewed apples can be introduced. “You can give fruit for breakfast, khichdi for lunch, and soup for dinner,” he said.
Dr. Balsekar advised avoiding introducing salt until nine months, as the babies’ kidneys are immature.
He also suggested avoiding sugar and opting for natural sugars such as figs, prunes, and dates at around 8-9 months of age.
