Chenab bridge: World’s highest rail bridge hailed an ‘engineering marvel’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the world’s highest rail bridge during his visit to Jammu today.

The bridge has been built over Chenab river to connect the Kashmir Valley. It stands 359 metres (1,178 feet) above the riverbed, which makes it 35 metres taller than the iconic Eiffel Tower in Paris.

The Chenab rail bridge spans 1,315 metres in length and will have stations at both ends.

“Through this bridge, traffic will be possible by train from Jammu to Kashmir Valley, which will open the way for tourism, industry and development in the region,” says the Railway Ministry.

The steel and concrete arch bridge was announced as a national project in 2002. The construction faced several challenges due to inclement weather and difficult terrain.
