The first cyclone of the pre-monsoon season, Cyclone Remal, is intensifying over the Bay of Bengal. Coastal areas brace for heavy rainfall and strong winds.
A low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal will become a severe cyclonic storm by Sunday evening. It’s the first cyclone this pre-monsoon season.
Coastal districts in West Bengal, north Odisha, Mizoram, Tripura, and south Manipur will experience heavy rainfall on May 26-27.
Fisherfolk should return to the coast and avoid venturing into the Bay of Bengal until May 27.
Cyclones are intensifying due to warmer oceans absorbing excess heat from greenhouse gas emissions. Sea surface temperatures in the Bay of Bengal are around 30°C.
Vertical wind shear plays a crucial role in cyclone intensity. Models suggest the cyclone won’t significantly affect monsoon progress.
