Roof Collapse at Delhi Airport A tragic incident unfolded early Friday at Delhi Airport’s Terminal 1 (T1) as heavy rain triggered the collapse of its roof canopy. The collapse resulted in one fatality and injuries to six others.

Flight Disruptions Following the roof collapse, flight operations at T1 have been halted. Flights originally scheduled for T1 are now being diverted to T2 and T3 to ensure minimal disruption to air travel.

Minister’s Terminal Inspection Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu conducted an onsite assessment at the airport, ordering a comprehensive inspection of all airport structures to prevent future incidents.

Compensation Announcement Minister Naidu announced financial compensation in response to the incident: Rs 20 lakh will be provided to the family of the deceased, and Rs 3 lakh to each injured individual as immediate relief.

Impact of Heavy Rain The Civil Aviation Ministry attributed the roof collapse to heavy rainfall, which compromised the integrity of the canopy structure at Terminal 1 of Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA).

Opposition Criticism: Corruption The Congress party sharply criticised the Modi government, alleging that years of corruption and negligence under its tenure have led to inadequate infrastructure.

Opposition Criticism: Political Attack The Trinamool Congress (TMC) condemned Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting the incident as a failure of his promises.

IndiGo Flight Cancellations In response to the terminal closure, IndiGo cancelled all flights scheduled at Terminal 1 until midnight. Passengers were advised to check revised departure and arrival terminals.

Terminal Operations Terminal 1 primarily handles domestic flights operated by IndiGo and SpiceJet. With approximately 1,400 daily flight movements, the terminal is crucial for domestic air travel from Delhi.

Investigation and Inspection DGCA will lead an investigation into the 2009-built Terminal 1 structure to determine the exact causes behind the collapse. Technical findings are pending.

Emergency Response Emergency services including CISF and NDRF swiftly responded to the incident, providing immediate assistance to the injured.
