Delhi Chalo March: Why Farmers Are Protesting? All Things To Know

Producer: Mehak Pal Editor: Aparna Singh

More than 200 farmers' unions, including the Samyukta Kisan Morcha and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, are set to hold a mega protest in Delhi on February 13.

Amid the farmers' protest, the Delhi Police on Feb 11 imposed section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code at the Uttar Pradesh borders.

On Feb 12, Delhi Police implemented Section 144 throughout the national capital as a precautionary measure in response to the farmers' Delhi Chalo March.

Section 144 in Delhi will be effective from February 12, 2024 and will remain in effect for 30 days till March 12.

Here's a look at why are farmers protesting and what are their demands.

The farm bodies are demanding a law guaranteeing a minimum support price (MSP), a condition they had set in 2021 when they agreed to withdraw their agitation against the now-repealed farm laws.

They are also demanding the implementation of the Swaminathan Commission’s recommendations, pensions for farmers and farm labourers, and farm debt waiver.

According to the farm bodies, the Centre should provide justice for victims of the Lakhimpur Kheri violence.
