A recent study in the Lancet found that 50% of Indian adults are physically unfit, with inactivity rising from 22.4% in 2000 to 45.4% in 2022, and projected to reach 55% by 2030.

The report notes that seven out of ten Indians are overweight, placing India among the top three obese nations. Dr. Muffazal Lakdawala from Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital offers age-specific physical activity recommendations.

At least one hour of outdoor physical activity daily, including aerobic exercises such as running, swimming, or gymnastics.

For children aged 5-12

A minimum of one hour of physical activity daily, focusing on aerobic exercises, muscle building, and bone strengthening.

For adolescents aged 13-17

Engage in 150-300 minutes of moderate exercise weekly or 75-150 minutes of high-intensity activity, with an emphasis on strength training.

For adults aged 18-34

Maintain the same activity levels as younger adults, but consider incorporating muscle training exercises and activities like yoga or Pilates.

For individuals aged 35-50

Aim for 75-100 minutes of exercise across the week, including aerobic activities, light weight training, and exercises to prevent post-menopausal bone loss.

For those over 50

Continue to stay active with 100 minutes of exercise per week, focusing on muscle training and low-impact activities like yoga or Tai-chi.

For seniors over 60
