Glenn Maxwell became Australia's first ever men's ODI double centurion on Nov 7, 2023 (Tuesday) at Wankhede ground, Mumbai, in their match vs Afghanistan.
He scored 201* (128), becoming the highest run scorer for the Aussies. Shane Watson's 185* vs Bangladesh (2011) was the previous highest.
He set the record for the second fastest double ton in ODI cricket, following India's Ishan Kishan's 200 at 126 balls.
Maxwell joined Chris Gayle (219) and Martin Guptill (237*) as the third player to score a double century in ODI World Cup history.
He also became the highest ever run scorer and the only double ton scorer in ODI World Cup as a non-opener batsman, coming at no. 3 or lower.
Maxwell became the first batter to score a double-century during an ODI chase, breaking Fakhar Zaman's 193-run record vs South Africa in 2021.
Afghanistan set a good enough 291 total, with Ibrahim Zadran's ton, but fell prey to the the all-rounder's top knock and luck as well.
The Aussies did not look in good shape before Maxi stepped in. They were reduced to 91/7, with chances of winning declining.
Maxi would also have been dismissed early on, if not for 3 major lifelines. He was dropped twice and was once given LBW out, but the DRS went in his favour.
When talking about the match, he said, "That LBW, it was going just above (the stumps), probably that made me be more proactive."
