Caused by exposure to high heat and humidity. Loss of fluids and electrolytes from the body.
SYMPTOMS: Muscular pains due to heat
ACTION PLAN: Stay hydrated, avoid strenuous exercise
If left untreated, can lead to heatstroke, a life-threatening condition.
SYMPTOMS: Cool, pale skin, heavy sweating
ACTION PLAN: Move to shade, loosen clothing, hydrate
A life-threatening condition in which the body is unable to cool itself.
SYMPTOMS: Hot, red skin, altered consciousness
ACTION PLAN: Urgently cool down, remove tight clothes
SYMPTOMS: Excessive panting or difficulty breathing, increased heart and respiratory rate, drooling, stupor
PREVENTION: -- Keep them in shade. -- Give them plenty of fresh, clean water. -- Don't leave them in enclosed vehicle. -- Keep them away from asphalt flooring which tends to heat quickly.
ACTION PLAN: -- Move them to a cool/air-conditioned area. -- Add ice to water when possible. -- Check on them frequently. -- Soak their vest or mat in cool water. -- If symptoms persist, take them to vet immediately.
DON'TS: -- Leave children or pets alone in enclosed vehicles. -- Have drinks with alcohol or too much caffeine. -- Do strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day. -- Venture out in high temperature.
DOS -- Stay hydrated even when you are not thirsty. -- Eat small meals and eat more often. -- Avoid extreme temperature changes. -- Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing. -- Postpone outdoor games and activities -- Take frequent breaks when working outdoors
