Himadri: India's first permanent Arctic research station

Earth Sciences Minister Kiren Rijiju has flagged off India's first winter science expedition to the Arctic region.

This will help India maintain year-long presence at its Himadri research station in Norway, as it has in the Antarctic near the South Pole

Himadri 'the abode of snow' is India’s first research station located at the International Arctic Research base, NyÅlesund, Svalbard, Norway.

It is located at a distance of 1,200 kilometres from the North Pole.

India's research station is in the NyAlesud town on the Brogger peninsula where research institutes from 10 countries have laboratories

India launched its Arctic research programme in 2007 to study connections between Arctic climate and Indian monsoon

India unveiled its Arctic Policy last year and plans to have more research stations and satellite ground stations in the region
