A Permanent Account Number (PAN) card is a unique, 10-character alphanumeric identifier issued by the Income Tax Department of India.
Apart from other roles, PAN is primarily used for filing income tax returns and paying taxes. It helps the government track financial transactions and ensures that individuals and entities are paying the correct amount of taxes.
All existing assessees or taxpayers or persons who are required to file a return of income, even on behalf of others, must have a PAN.
