How To Make Appam Using Overripe Bananas?

Do you often discard overripe bananas? Why not use them to make South Indian-style pancakes instead?

Packed with carbs, vitamin B6, manganese, fibre, potassium and other nutrients, bananas should be a part of everyone’s daily diet.

Appam, also called paniyaram, is a type of pancake that is spherical and is quite famous in South India and Sri Lanka and is made with fermented rice batter and coconut milk.

But if you have ripe bananas at home, you can try the banana appam recipe.

To make this, you will need 2-3 ripe bananas, 1/2 cup wheat flour, 1/4 cup rice flour, 1 cup country sugar, 1/4 tsp cardamom, 1/2 cup grated coconut and a tablespoon of ghee. You will also need a teaspoon of black sesame seeds, soda salt and water.

Step 1: Take the ripe bananas and mash them well with a fork. Do not blend it.

Step 2: Sieve wheat and rice flour together. Then add the sugar and water.

Step 3: Mix it thoroughly to form a dough without lumps.

Step 4: Add cardamom and mix in the grated coconut along with some ghee to the dough.

Step 5: Take the appam pan and let it heat. Then add ghee and cook the mixture until it turns a beautiful golden brown shade and the inside is cooked fully.
