Heat can damage  your medicines, here's what you should know

Moneycontrol News | July 17, 2024

You must always protect yourself against heat stroke. When the temperature is high, it is not just the heat-related illnesses that you should be wary of. Heat can amplify the side effects of some common medications

Did you know that BP pills used to reduce fluid in the blood can sometimes lead to dehydration? This is because beta blockers for heart conditions decrease blood flow to the skin, and you wouldn't feel the heat

On the other hand, some antidepressants don't let you stay cool. Aspirin and some other pain relievers decrease fluid and sodium levels, making it harder to deal  with high temperatures

The combination of heat and drug side effects can lead to lightheadedness and falls. Alcohol increases the danger

Some medicines — antibiotics, antifungals and acne drugs — can heighten sensitivity to the sun, causing rashes and sunburns. If you’re taking them, stay under an umbrella or wear sun-protective fabrics and sunscreen

If you are on any kind of medication, it is always recommended to keep them in a cool, dry place, unless it is specifically mentioned that they need refrigeration. You should be extra careful about this while travelling

If you are taking a flight, always  keep your medicines in the carry-on bag. Other than the risk of defaulting on taking your medicine, remember that it can get  too cold in the cargo hold, and it may not  be good for your medicines
