Amidst nationwide protests over the rape and murder of a young doctor in Kolkata, an analysis by CHRI reveals alarming trends in violence against women across India.
Nearly five cases of rape with murder occur weekly, from 2017 to 2022, with many cases unreported due to social stigma, reflecting deep-rooted patriarchy.
Every Indian state and union territory, except Lakshadweep, reported at least one case of rape with murder during the 2017-2022 period, highlighting a nationwide crisis.
Only 64.94% of the 308 cases tried for rape with murder resulted in conviction during 2017-2022, raising concerns over the effectiveness of the legal system.
The enduring patriarchy blames women for their own safety, perpetuating underreporting and fostering a culture where violence against women continues unabated.
