India vs South Africa, T20 World Cup 2024: India Clinch An ICC Trophy After 11 Years
India ended their trophy drought by securing a 7-run win against South Africa in a nerve-racking match at Kensington Oval, Barbados on Saturday (June 29).
Put to bat first, India posted 176/7 in 20 overs, powered by Virat Kohli's opening knock of 76 (59), after losing skipper Sharma early.
India were three down within the Powerplay. Then Axar Patel's crucial 47 off 31 and Shivam Dubey's 27 off 16 helped register the highest total in a T20 World Cup final.
In their chase, the Proteas were also one down early. Quinton de Kock held it together by scoring 39 runs.
After skipper Markram's dismissal for cheap, Stubbs' 31 (22) and Klaasen's 52 (27) almost brought the match in SA's hands.
Then David Miller aimed at finishing the match for his side, but his plans were foiled by Suryakumar Yadav's sensational catch out.
SA's 30 off 30 target turned to 16 off 6. Hardik Pandya held nerves and let them score just 8 runs off the final over. He took three wickets in the match.
Jasprit Bumrah's 2/18 (4) was also a crucial part of India's win. He was named the player of the tournament due to his 15 wickets amassed in the T20 World Cup 2024.
Arshdeep Singh also registered good figures of 2/20 (4) but Axar Patel proved expensive by conceding 49 runs in 4 overs, including 25 runs off the 15th over.
