Grandmaster Karthikeyan Murali defeated Magnus Carlsen at the Qatar Masters this week.
Murali beat the world number one with black pieces in the seventh round.
This was the 24-year-old’s first meeting with Carlsen.
Karthikeyan’s win took his joint lead to a score of 5.5 out of 7.
He is the third Indian to get the better of Carlsen in classical chess.
Pentala Harikrishna and Viswanathan Anand had also achieved this feat.
Anand had won against Carlsen at the Norway Chess tournament in June last year.
Anand had emerged victorious against the Norwegian in 50 moves back then.
Pentala Harikrishna secured a memorable win against the world number one in 2005.
Carlsen was just 14 when he lost to Harikrishna.
