Ford is developing an innovative tech to enhance pedestrian safety in its large SUVs and pickups.
The new tech involves an inflatable bumper, patented by Ford, aimed at improving pedestrian safety.
These inflatable bumpers will function similarly to traditional airbags, inflating immediately upon impact.
The inflatable bumper isn’t designed to cushion pedestrians, but serves specific purposes.
The upper membrane provides support to the pedestrian’s knee, preventing leg breaks.
The lower membrane prevents the pedestrian from going underneath the moving vehicle.
The inflatable membranes resemble normal airbags that inflate upon impact.
The patent drawings illustrate the tech on a Ford F-150, indicating it’s designed for larger vehicles.
There’s no confirmation yet whether it will actually be used in vehicles as the tech is currently in its patent stage.
