International Sushi Day: 10 types of sushi that are a must-try 

Nigiri Nigiri sushi is the traditional sushi that consists of hand-pressed mounds of sushi rice topped with slices of fresh fish or seafood. Common toppings include tuna, salmon, and shrimp among others. 

Sashimi Sashimi consists of thinly sliced raw fish or seafood served without rice. Sashimi is typically enjoyed with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger to complement the delicate flavours.

Temaki Temaki sushi, also known as hand rolls, are cone-shaped sushi rolls wrapped in nori and filled with sushi rice, fish, vegetables, and other ingredients. 

Chirashi Chirashi sushi, meaning “scattered sushi”, is a colourful bowl of sushi rice topped with an assortment of sashimi, vegetables, and other garnishes.

Narezushi Narezushi is one of the earliest forms of sushi. It involves fermenting fish and rice together over months or even years and has a tangy flavour. 

Uramaki This is made of sushi rice, filling and a sheet of nori seaweed rolled in such a way that the nori is on the inside and the rice is on the outside.

Inari Inari sushi is made of sushi rice stuffed inside seasoned deep-fried tofu pockets. The pockets are then cooked in broth and squeezed to remove the liquid, then filled with sushi rice. 

Tako A popular form of sushi in Japan, this consists of octopus. It is grilled or boiled and then wrapped in sushi rice. 

Oshizushi This sushi is made from sushi rice and fillings that are placed in a mould and compressed together by a weight, making them into a tightly pack sushi stack. 

Futomaki This is an all-time favourite vegetarian version. It is rolled in a more traditional manner by having the nori on the outside.
