International Sushi Day: 10 types of sushi that are a must-try
NigiriNigiri sushi is the traditional sushi that consists of hand-pressed mounds of sushi rice topped with slices of fresh fish or seafood. Common toppings include tuna, salmon, and shrimp among others.
SashimiSashimi consists of thinly sliced raw fish or seafood served without rice. Sashimi is typically enjoyed with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger to complement the delicate flavours.
TemakiTemaki sushi, also known as hand rolls, are cone-shaped sushi rolls wrapped in nori and filled with sushi rice, fish, vegetables, and other ingredients.
ChirashiChirashi sushi, meaning “scattered sushi”, is a colourful bowl of sushi rice topped with an assortment of sashimi, vegetables, and other garnishes.
NarezushiNarezushi is one of the earliest forms of sushi. It involves fermenting fish and rice together over months or even years and has a tangy flavour.
UramakiThis is made of sushi rice, filling and a sheet of nori seaweed rolled in such a way that the nori is on the inside and the rice is on the outside.
InariInari sushi is made of sushi rice stuffed inside seasoned deep-fried tofu pockets. The pockets are then cooked in broth and squeezed to remove the liquid, then filled with sushi rice.
TakoA popular form of sushi in Japan, this consists of octopus. It is grilled or boiled and then wrapped in sushi rice.
OshizushiThis sushi is made from sushi rice and fillings that are placed in a mould and compressed together by a weight, making them into a tightly pack sushi stack.
FutomakiThis is an all-time favourite vegetarian version. It is rolled in a more traditional manner by having the nori on the outside.
