International Yoga Day: 6 gurus who took yoga to the world

As the world celebrates International Yoga Day, take a look at some of the most renowned gurus of modern yoga.

Called the ‘Father of Modern Yoga’, he is widely considered as the architect of the vinyasa style & is renowned for his role in reviving ‘Hatha Yoga’.

Tirumalai Krishnamacharya (1888-1989)

A doctor by profession, he taught ‘Yoga of Trinity’ which is an amalgamation of Hatha Yoga, Karma Yoga & Master Yoga.

Swami Sivananda (1887-1963)

One of the earliest students of T Krishnamacharya, he leaned towards yoga after suffering from many diseases in childhood. He redefined Patanjali’s yoga sutras & gifted the world what is now known as ‘Iyengar Yoga’.

BKS Iyengar (1918-2014)

Widely recognised as the Father of Yoga in the West, where he introduced the teachings of meditation & Kriya Yoga, his form of yoga puts emphasis on uniting with the infinite through a certain action or kriya.

Paramahansa Yogananda (1893-1952)

Recognised as one of the foremost scientists in the field of consciousness in modern times, he is the founder of Transcendental Meditation technique. He has achieved fame as the guru to the Beatles, the Beach Boys among other celebrities.

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi (1918-2008)

A leading yoga guru for 75 years, he was credited with systematising the method of Ashtanga Vinyasa. He popularised the form of Yoga in UK, US, Canada & his practioners include celebrities like Madonna & Gwyneth Paltrow.
