MS Dhoni might be retained as an uncapped player, with less money as compared to his current IPL salary.
Reason: As per the proposed IPL Retention Rules, any player who has retired from international cricket for over 5 years will be treated as an uncapped player.
An ESPNcricinfo report claimed that CSK proposed the rule, keeping Thala in mind. However, a lot of other franchises, including SRH objected to it.
SRH CEO Kavya Maran told CricBuzz, “When new uncapped players get more money in the auction, it sets a wrong precedent to allow senior players to be retained as uncapped."
Amidst all the drama, MS Dhoni still has not confirmed his participation in the 2025 edition of the IPL.
He said, "Once the rules and regulations get formalised, I will take a call, but needs to be in the best interest of the team."
Therefore, the IPL rules might either make the CSK star continue for one more season of the IPL or lead to his retirement.
Speaking on this topic on his YouTube channel, R Ashwin remarked, "Can a player like Dhoni play as an uncapped player? That is another conversation."
