France's Leon Marchand has set an Olympic record on home turf.
The swimmer won a gold medal in the 400m individual medley.
With this, he scripted a new Olympic best, which was previously set by Michael Phelps.
Phelps had set the record (4:03.84) at the 2008 Olympics, held in Beijing.
Marchand clocked 4:02.95 to achieve this sensational feat.
But the Frenchman still finished outside his own world record time.
Japan’s Tomoyuki Matsushita won the silver medal.
The third place was secured by USA’s Carson Foster.
Great Britain's Max Litchfield finished fourth.
Marchand is coached by Phelps' former mentor Bob Bowman.
Marchand had registered his world mark of 4:02.50 at the world championships in Japan last year.
