Lok Sabha Elections 2024 Phase I will start from April 19. In the first phase of elections, voting will be held across 102 of 543 seats in the country.

In India, the "inked finger" has become an iconic symbol of voting, proudly displayed by millions after they cast their ballots. Here are some intriguing details about this mark of democracy.

Voter's ink, also called indelible ink, is applied to the left-hand index finger at polling booths to prevent duplicate voting.

Mysore Paints and Varnish Limited has been the exclusive supplier of the ink since the 1960s.

News reports state that the Election Commission has ordered over 26 lakh vials of indelible ink for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

The report suggests that a single 10mg vial can cover up to 700 voters.

India requires nearly 30 lakh vials of ink for the upcoming elections, costing the exchequer ₹55 crore, the Firstpost reported.

Removing the ink is challenging and hence is used to prevent duplicate voting. Voters have tried makeup-removing micellar water, lemon juice, and raw papaya sap with limited success.
