India’s 2024 Lok Sabha elections highlight the under-representation of women among candidates.
Official data shows only 9.6% of the 8,337 candidates are women.
The women’s reservation bill, aiming to reserve one-third of seats for women, is yet to be implemented.
Despite the bill, women’s representation has seen only a slight increase this year.
Of the 8,337 candidates, only 797 are women, as per the Association of Democratic Reforms.
The first phase saw 135 women out of 1,618 candidates.
Phase 2 had 100 women out of 1,192 candidates, while phase 3 had 123 women out of 1,352.
Phases 4 to 7 saw 170, 82, 92, and 95 women candidates respectively.
Women contesting general elections increased from 3% in 1957 to nearly 10% in 2024.
BJP leads with 16% women candidates, while Congress has 13%. 1. JMM and BJD both have 33%. RJD, SP, and AITC have 29%, 20%, and 25% respectively.
Naam Tamilar Katchi achieved 50% female candidates. Lok Janshakti Party and Nationalist Congress Party each have 40%.
