Madhya Pradesh Polls 2023:  How people voted in the past elections

As Madhya Pradesh votes today, here's a look back at the interesting results from the past Assembly elections

The Congress dominated the political landscape in Madhya Pradesh's first general elections in 1957, obtaining an overwhelming majority of 232 seats out of 288.

The Congress won four of the five elections held between 1980 and 1998, with the exception of the 1990 elections, in which it won only 56 of the 320 seats.

The BJP's best success in the state so far has been in the 2003 Assembly election, when it won 173 seats.

In the 2008 Assembly elections, the BJP won 143 seats while the Congress secured 71 seats.

The electoral see-saw picked up in the Assembly elections in 2013, with the BJP regaining some seats and securing a total of 165 seats to the Congress' 58.

In the 2018 elections, the Congress won 114 seats, slightly more than the BJP's 109. With support from the SP and BSP, along with independent MLAs, the Congress formed the government. Kamal Nath was sworn in as the new chief minister.

In March 2022, 22 sitting MLAs close to Jyotiraditya Scindia resigned and joined the BJP. The BJP came back into power and Shivraj Singh Chouhan returned as chief minister.

The BJP has won the largest vote-share in every Assembly election in Madhya Pradesh between 2003 to 2018.
