Market at close: Sensex slips to 72,987, Nifty drops to 22,201

The market closed little changed amid volatility, erasing intra-day gains.

Midcaps outperform, keeping market breadth in favour of advances.

Midcap index rises 1% vs flat close for benchmarks.

Sensex slips 118 points to 72,987 and Nifty drops 17 points to 22,201.

Nifty Bank falls 172 points to 47,687 while Midcap index rises 483 points to 50,708.

Coal India is the top Nifty gainer, up 4% on reports of increasing e-auction premiums.

Two-wheeler names (Eicher, TVS, and Bajaj Auto) are under pressure, down 2% each.

FMCG stocks slip in Wednesday’s session, with Asian Paints and Britannia being the top losers.

Big buying seen in airline stocks; IndiGo and SpiceJet gain 3-6%.

Oil marketing companies gain in the second half as crude remains in a range, stocks up 2-3%.

Investors remain positive on defence names; BEL, Bharat Forge, and HAL up 1-3%.

BSE-listed companies gain market capitalisation for the fourth straight session, up over ₹2 lakh crore today.
