India batter Mayank Agarwal fell ill before his New Delhi-bound flight was about to take off, complaining of a burning sensation in his mouth and throat.

He drank a liquid from a pouch on his flight seat, mistaking it for water, and had to be rushed to Agartala’s ILJ Hospital’s ICU.

Agarwal, Karnataka's Ranji team captain, lodged a formal complaint with the police through his manager, under NCCPS (New Capital Complex Police Station).

“He (Mayank) is stable and his vitals are normal. SP West Tripura, Kiran Kumar told PTI. But, he won’t be able to speak for 48 hours.

The cop said, Agarwal experienced “irritation in his mouth and suddenly he couldn’t talk…He had swelling and ulcers in the mouth“ after consuming the liquid.

Agarwal recently led Karnataka to victory against Tripura in the Ranji Trophy 2024 and was set to travel with the team to Surat.

However, he will miss the next game against Railways at Lalabhai Contractor Stadium starting Feb 2 (Friday), due to his health condition.

Being the designated vice-captain, Nikin Jose is expected to take over the team’s captaincy in Agarwal's absence for the upcoming match.

The state health secretary, Kiran Gitte, mentioned the police's acknowledgment of the complaint and assured investigation and treatment.

Investigations will determine the nature of the liquid consumed and ensure appropriate measures for Agarwal's recovery and future safety.
