Jonathan arrived on Saint Helena in 1882 from the Seychelles Islands. Fully grown on arrival, he was already at least 50 years old.

Jonathan’s birthday is celebrated each year on New Year’s Day, honouring his longevity. Though he may be even older than 192 years!

Jonathan is cherished on the island and lives at the governor’s residence. He enjoys roaming the grounds and interacting with visitors.

Jonathan’s diet includes grasses, leaves, and fruits. Fresh produce was introduced by his caretaker, Joe Hollins, improving his health significantly.

Weighing about 200 kg and measuring 1.2 meters, Jonathan remains healthy despite his age. He enjoys basking in the sun and grazing on grass.
Though Jonathan is blind and cannot smell, he has excellent hearing. His caretaker, Joe Hollins, ensures he receives the best care possible.

Jonathan witnessed 31 governors and was around 50 years old when the incandescent lightbulb was invented. He’s a living piece of history!

Drawing 1,500 tourists annually, Jonathan has become a major attraction. A tortoise corridor was created so visitors can see him without disturbance.
