The Mumbai Coastal Road project on Friday April 26 achieved a historic milestone.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) successfully connected the Mumbai Coastal Road and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link.

The BMC connected the two routes by installing the first giant beam (bow arch string girder) by making use of the tide in the open sea.

It is a first-of-its-kind experiment in the country to connect two roads using tides by laying beams.

The installation of the girder began at 2:00 am and was completed by 3:25 am.

The first beam connecting the two ends was launched from Mazgaon Dock on Wednesday, April 24, 2024 at 12.30 pm and on Thursday, April 25, 2024, at 4:00 am, it reached the Bandra-Worli Sea Link.

Using a barge, the beam was transported in stages along the Mumbai Coastal Road to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. The engineers skillfully positioned the platform by predicting sea waves and wind speed.

Municipal Corporation Commissioner and Administrator Bhushan Gagrani personally attended and praised the Mumbai coastal road team for the historic moment.

Additional Municipal Commissioner (Eastern Suburbs) Amit Saini, Deputy Commissioner (Special Engineering) Chakradhar Kandalkar, Chief Engineer (Mumbai Coastal Road Project) Girish Nikam, Vice President of HCC Arjun Dhawan, Head of Campaign Santosh Rai and other engineers, officers were also present.

The beam will be cemented in the next phase, using C-5 Japanese technology to prevent rusting. Advanced welding techniques are used to join its spare parts.
