Mumbai’s Premier Padmini known as Kaali Peeli Taxis goes off-road from October 30.
Last Premier Padmini was registered as black-and-yellow cab at RTO on October 29, 2003.
Premier Padmini started its journey as taxis in 1964, with model Fiat-1100 Delight.
Fiat-1100 Delight was a powerful 1200-cc car with steering-mounted gear shifter.
Age limit for Premier Padmini cabs in Mumbai is 20 years.
These cabs were popular because of their smaller size, reliable engines and easy maintenance.
In the 1970s, the car was renamed Premier Padmini to honour Indian queen Padmini.
Production was halted in 2001 by Premier Automobile Limit (PAL).
Prabhadevi resident Abdul Kareem Karsekar owns the last registered Premier Padmini taxi of Mumbai.
The cabs played a significant role in films like Taxi No. 9211 and Khaali-Peeli.
