Regularly checking lipid levels is crucial for preventing heart attacks and strokes, even for apparently healthy individuals.

The Cardiological Society of India (CSI) has released new dyslipidemia guidelines based on local data.

New guidelines advise annual lipid checks starting at age 18, with setting yearly reminders, like on your birthday to ensure timely testing.

Dyslipidemia, often symptomless, can lead to artery plaque buildup causing sudden strokes due to high cholesterol and triglycerides.

A June 2023 study in The Lancet found 81.2% of Indians have dyslipidemia.

Guidelines classify risks into low, moderate, high, and very high categories based on health and lifestyle.

'Low-risk' individuals lack heart disease risks.

'Moderate' includes smokers, hypertension, or diabetes.

‘High risk' includes people with diabetes and other risk factors.

'Very high risk' covers those with artery blockages or long-term diabetes.

Compare your lipid profile to new guidelines for accurate health assessment, aiming for optimal LDL levels.
