A New Species of Snake

A new discovery has been made in India—a new species of snake with an unusually long snout. This species, named the long-snouted vine snake (Ahaetulla Longirostris), is a remarkable addition to India's rich biodiversity.

Where Was It Found?

The snake was discovered in two vastly different regions of India: Bihar, in the eastern part of the country, and Meghalaya, located in the northeast. This discovery was published in the Journal of Asia-Pacific Biodiversity.

How the Discovery Began

In December 2021, scientists Sourabh Verma and Soham Pattekar found a 4-foot-long dead snake near the Valmiki Tiger Reserve in Bihar. The snake’s unusually long snout immediately caught their attention.

Confirming a New Species

The scientists collected samples and conducted DNA testing. The results confirmed that this was a completely new species of vine snake, different from any known in the region.

The Long-Snouted Vine Snake

With its slender body and vivid colours of bright green or orange-brown, this vine snake can grow up to 4 feet long. Its unique feature is its long snout, which sets it apart from other species.
