No Smoking Day: How cigarettes harm the body

Moneycontrol News

No Smoking Day is observed on the second Wednesday of March to highlight the many health problems that cigarettes can cause while providing help to smokers who want to quit. Here is how smoking can harm the body:

Respiratory Issues

Smoking damages the respiratory system, leading to conditions like chronic bronchitis, emphysema etc.

Lung cancer

Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer. The carcinogens in tobacco smoke can cause mutations in lung cells, leading to the development of cancerous tumors.

Increased blood pressure

Smoking causes a temporary increase in blood pressure and heart rate. Over time, this can contribute to hypertension (high blood pressure), which is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke.

Cardiovascular disease

Smoking increases the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. It contributes to the narrowing and hardening of arteries, leading to reduced blood flow to vital organs.

Oral Health Problems

Smoking is harmful to oral health and can lead to issues such as gum disease, tooth decay, tooth loss, and oral cancer.

Premature ageing

Smoking accelerates the aging process, leading to premature wrinkles, sagging skin, and a dull complexion.
