The average cost of a vegetarian thali increased by 9% in May, according to a report by CRISIL.

Meanwhile, the cost of a non-vegetarian meal decreased, as per CRISIL Market Intelligence and Analysis' monthly "Roti Rice Rate" report.

The cost of a veg thali, including roti, vegetables (onions, tomatoes and potatoes), rice, dal, curd, and salad, rose to ₹27.8 per plate in May, up from ₹25.5 a year ago and ₹27.4 in April 2024.

While the cost of non-veg thali, comprising of all the same ingredients but dal gets replaced by chicken, declined to ₹55.9 in May, down from ₹59.9 a year ago and ₹56.3 in April 2024.

The report attributed the overall hike in the price of a vegetarian thali to a 39% increase in the price of tomatoes, 41% in potatoes, and 43% in onions.

The price of rice and pulses also increased by 13% and 21%, respectively.

The report stated that prices of cumin, chili, and vegetable oil dropped by 37%, 25%, and 8%, respectively, preventing a further rise in the cost of the vegetarian thali.

The main reason for the year-on-year decrease in the price of a non-veg thali was attributed to a 16% decline in broiler prices, which accounts for 50% of the overall cost.
