Onam, a major annual event for Keralites, will begin from Tuesday, 30 August. It is the official festival of Kerala & includes a spectrum of cultural events

Family members wake up early in the morning, wear new clothes and worship Vaman Vishnu idols.

Malayali women draw “Pookkalam”, floral designs on the ground of their homes & light lamps around it to welcome King Mahabali

On Thiru Onam, women decorate swing with flowers and ride it by turns singing melodious songs.

On the 3rd day of Onam, people invite their relatives & friends to a grand celebration called “Onam Sadya”. 

Onasadhya means Onam Food Feast & is a symbol of prosperity that existed during of rule of Mahabali.

The famous Vallam Kali or snake boat race is organised at various places and is the most enchanting facet of the festival of Onam.

On the 9th day of Onam, dependents of the family give presents or gifts to the eldest member of the family called “Karanavar”.

During Onam festival,  various cultural activities & festivities are held in temples & religious places. 

Elephants are decorated with ornaments & grand processions are held.
