The Quit India Movement was launched by Mahatma Gandhi on August 8, 1942, demanding an end to the British rule in India. Here are eight things you should know about the movement:

The Quit India Movement is also known as August Kranti or August Movement.

The Congress Working Committee passed the Quit India Resolution at Wardha, Maharashtra, in July 1942.

The movement was formally launched at the Bombay session of the All India Congress Committee by Mahatma Gandhi on August 8, 1942.

The slogan ‘Quit India’ was coined by Yusuf Meherally who was a socialist and also a trade unionist.

The movement put forth the demand for complete and immediate end of British colonial rule in India.

Mumbai’s Gowalia Tank Maidan, also known as August Kranti Maidan, is the place where Gandhi delivered his speech marking the beginning of the movement.

The British responded by arresting several national leaders, among them were Mahatma Gandhi, Abdul Kalam Azad, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

The vacuum of leadership led to the emergence of several young leaders such as Ram Manohar Lohia, Jayaprakash Narayan, Aruna Asaf Ali, and others. These leaders continued to stoke the flame of the movement throughout India.
