All You Need to Know About Beating the Retreat Ceremony

Beating the Retreat Ceremony takes place at Vijay Chowk in Delhi, near the Rashtrapati Bhavan, India Gate and Parliament House.

Date and Time

It is held on January 29th, three days after Republic Day, starting in the evening.

Origin

The tradition to announce the return of the troops began when King James II ordered his troops to beat drums, lower flags and organise a parade to declare the end of a day of combat.

Participants

It involves performances by the bands of the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force, along with pipe bands and buglers from various regiments.

Format

The ceremony begins with the arrival of the President of India, who is the Chief Guest, accompanied by the Vice President, the Prime Minister and other dignitaries.

Fanfare

The event starts with the massed bands playing popular tunes. This year, 29 tunes inspired by classical ragas will be played.

Beating Retreat

The famous Beating Retreat ceremony, involves a series of military tunes, drum rolls and intricate formations.

Spectacle

This year's ceremony will showcase one of the largest Drone Show till date, with 3,500 indigenous drones illuminating the sky.

Flag Lowering

The national flag is lowered amidst the playing of the national anthem, marking the official end of the Republic Day celebrations.
