Rohit Sharma can break a 17-year-old record in the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy.
He is expected to play in Mumbai match against Jammu and Kashmir.
The upcoming fixture will be played at the MCA Cricket Ground on Thursday, January 23.
This will make Rohit the first Test captain in 17 years to appear in a Ranji Trophy match.
Anil Kumble was the last presiding Test skipper to feature in the domestic tournament.
He represented Karnataka during their match against Himachal Pradesh in 2007.
Kumble had replaced Rahul Dravid as Test skipper only a week before the fixture.
There have been four Test captains for India between Kumble and Rohit.
They include MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane (stand-in) and KL Rahul (stand-in).
Neither Dhoni nor Kohli competed in a Ranji Trophy match while holding the skipper role
