Shubman Gill silences critics, overcomes lean patch with century in Vizag

Shubman Gill headlined Day 3 of the second Test between India and England with a sparkling 104 off 147 balls

Not only is it Gill’s first century since March last year, it also happens to be his first three-figure score since he shifted to the No 3 slot in the Test team

The Punjab batter had recently hit rock bottom with a two-ball duck in Hyderabad, and was reportedly served an ultimatum by the Indian team management to get his act together

Gill had collected just 173 runs in his last six outings before the Visakhapatnam Test at an average of 17.30, and faced the prospect of going back to the domestic circuit to regain his form

Gill however, has ensured those concerns have been put to rest for now with his first century in the white-ball format in nearly a year, proving he belongs at this level after all

Gill’s fighting knock as well as his crucial partnership with Axar Patel helped prevent an Indian collapse on Day 3 and allowed them to set England a challenging 399 to win the 2nd Test
