Across North America on Monday, a total solar eclipse cast a shadow on cities in Mexico, the US, and Canada. At 11:37 p.m. IST, the solar eclipse touched down at Mazatlan on the Pacific coast of Mexico. The complete eclipse was the first in North America since 2017.
Viewers from all around North America were able to witness the cosmic phenomenon, which is when the moon passes squarely between the Earth and the sun, fully obscuring the sun with its shadow.
Depending on where the observer was, the totality period might have lasted up to four minutes. Outside the path of totality, a partial eclipse occurred across the majority of the continental United States, covering only a fraction of the sun.
Because it passed across more densely populated regions than past eclipses, this total solar eclipse attracted a lot of attention. An estimated 31.6 million people were able to see the spectacle without having to leave their cities.
Torreon in Mexico emerged as the eclipse enthusiast's prime location, offering the longest duration of totality.
