2 onions 2 big tomatoes 3-4 cloves garlic 1 inch ginger 2-3 dry red chillies 1/4 tsp turmeric powder 1 tsp Kashmiri red chilli powder 2 tsp sambar powder 2 tbsp peanuts 3 tbsp roasted chana dal 1 tbsp poppy seeds 1 tsp fennel seeds 1/4 tsp peppercorns 1 cup coconut 1 cup water
1 tbsp oil 1/2 tsp mustard seeds 1/2 tsp fennel seeds 1 bay leaf 1/2 inch cinnamon 6-7 shallots 2 dry red chillies 2 sprig curry leaves 1 cup water, adjustable Salt, to taste 1/4 tsp garam masala powder 1 tbsp ghee 1/4 cup coriander, finely chopped
Add all the ingredients mentioned for the masala in a blender and blend to make a paste. Keep aside.
Add fennel, mustard seeds and let it splutter. Add bay leaf, cinnamon, dry red chillies and curry leaves.
Add shallots and cook for 2-3 minutes. Add in ground paste, water and mix well. Cook for 2-3 whistles.
Once done, add in garam masala, ghee and coriander. Mix well and enjoy with idli or appam.
