Tea is best consumed without milk, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said in its revised dietary guidelines released last week.

Tea's theobromine and theophylline relaxes arteries, aiding blood circulation. Its flavonoids and polyphenols may lower heart disease and stomach cancer risk.

However, these benefits can be best obtained if milk is not added to tea and if it is taken in moderation, the guideline said.

The ICMR also highlighted the risk of developing anaemia if you are combining tea or coffee with your lunch or dinner.

The tannin present in tea and coffee is known to interfere with absorption of iron, an essential element for blood production, the guideline said.

Further, the ICMR advised avoiding tea and coffee at least one hour before and after meals.

ICMR also raised concern over excessive caffeine consumption and recommended a daily caffeine intake limit of 300 mg.

A 150ml cup of brewed coffee contains between 80 to 120 mg of caffeine, while instant coffee ranges from 50 to 65 mg, and tea contains approximately 30 to 65 mg of caffeine per serving, the guideline highlighted.
