The states going to polls before the 2024 Lok Sabha election

Elections to the Madhya Pradesh Assembly are likely to take place in or around November. The state has 230 constituencies and a tough fight is expected between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the main Opposition Congress

Madhya Pradesh

The state election in 2023 will take place nearly four years after the Congress administration in the state fell, due to a rebellion and defection by former Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia, prompting then-CM Kamal Nath to resign.

Rajasthan is another state where the BJP and Congress are competing closely. In 2018, the Congress overthrew the Vasundhara Raje-led BJP government by winning 100 of the Assembly's 200 seats.

The Rajasthan Assembly elections 2023 are expected to be held in December this year.

The Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly has 90 seats and is led by Chief Minister Bhupesh Bhagel. In 2018, the Congress won 68 of the state's 90 seats, while the BJP received only 16.

Since the Congress defeated the BJP to form the government in Chhattisgarh, Health Minister TS Singh Deo and Bhupesh Baghel have been at odds, in the state expected to go to polls in November.

Telangana will see a triangular struggle between the BJP, Congress, and the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi, the former TRS's new version.

The TRS under Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao is seeking for a stronger national role in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, and the November-December 2023 Assembly election would serve as a litmus test.

The Mizoram Assembly election for 2023 is scheduled for later this year, around November or December. In Mizoram, the Mizo National Front (MNF), which is a constituent of both the NDA at the Centre and the BJP-led NEDA in the territory, seems ready to reclaim power.

In the 2018 Assembly elections, the Mizo National Front (MNF) government won 26 of the 40 seats. The Congress could only win five seats. This was the first time, the BJP opened its account in the state.
