Threads is a text-based app by Meta, set to compete with Twitter. It has been officially announced by Mark Zuckerberg and is described as a separate platform for public conversations and real-time updates.
On Threads, one can write text posts or share photos and videos, much like Twitter. It brings on a few features from Instagram, but it is a new platform.
Threads is available on App Store and Google Play Store for iOS and Android, respectively, and also on threads.net on the web. Here’s all you need to know about the new social media app:

Use your Instagram credentials. Your Instagram handle will automatically appear for you to log in.
After logging in, view the complete list of individuals you follow on Instagram. Choose to follow any number of them or set your profile to public or private.
Threads of text posts (up to 500 characters), photos, and videos in posts and replies.
Main feed features recommended content and posts from users you follow, much like Instagram.
Currently, no advertisements within the app. However, if the app grows in the future, Meta may decide to introduce ads.
Instagram's privacy controls will be available in Threads, provided by Meta. Option to filter out specific words in replies and choose who is allowed to reply to their threads.
Instagram's blue checks will be carried over to Threads accounts. No paid verification plan for unlocking additional features exists.
The Threads app has many similarities to Twitter. The main feed displays posts or "threads" from accounts you follow and recommendations from Instagram's algorithm.
