In the 2014 T20 World Cup semi-final, Kohli's stunning chase against South Africa brought India close. When India needed 1 off 7, Dhoni did not take a run to let Kohli score the winning run.
In the 2013 tri-series between India, West Indies, and Sri Lanka, Dhoni missed a few games due to injury, and Kohli captained India to the final. Dhoni returned to lead the win and invited deputy Kohli to collect the trophy for his role.
When Dhoni stepped down as the Indian captain in 2019, new skipper Kohli praised him, stating “MS will always be my captain”. During Kohli's tenure, he often sought Dhoni's advice on field placements.
In 2018 Dhoni said, “If it’s [about] the stats, I think Virat and this squad will win more games than me in all formats.” He repeatedly praised Kohli's passion, saying it gives the team an edge.
In the post-match press conference following India’s loss vs Pakistan, Kohli stated that he received calls from no one other than MS after stepping down as India's Test skipper earlier in 2022.
