Top food spending trends in rural and urban India

The latest study by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) reveals that the per capita monthly household expenditure has more than doubled in 2022-23 compared to the figures recorded in 2011-12.

NSSO, under Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, conducted Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (HCES) during August 2022 to July 2023. Take a look at rural and urban India’s average spends per month on food.

Rural India: ₹3,860 (53% non-food items, 47% food items)

Urban India: ₹6,521 (60% non-food items, 40% food items)

Average person spend per month

Rural India: ₹267 (Share in total monthly expenditure: 6.92%)

Urban India: ₹294 (Share in total monthly expenditure: 4.51%)

Cereals & cereal substitutes

Rural India: ₹76 (Share in total monthly expenditure: 1.97%)

Urban India: ₹90 (Share in total monthly expenditure: 1.38%)

Grams & pulses

Rural India: ₹35 (Share in total monthly expenditure: 0.92%)

Urban India: ₹39 (Share in total monthly expenditure: 0.60%)

Sugar & salt

Rural India: ₹314 (Share in total monthly expenditure: 8.14%)

Urban India: ₹466 (Share in total monthly expenditure: 7.15%)

Milk & milk products

Rural India: ₹203 (Share in total monthly expenditure: 5.26%)

Urban India: ₹245 (Share in total monthly expenditure: 3.76%)

Vegetables

Rural India: ₹140 (Share in total monthly expenditure: 3.63%)

Urban India: ₹246 (Share in total monthly expenditure: 3.77%)

Fruits

Rural India: ₹185 (Share in total monthly expenditure: 4.80%)

Urban India: ₹231 (Share in total monthly expenditure: 3.54%)

Egg, fish, & meat

Rural India: ₹136 (Share in total monthly expenditure: 3.52%)

Urban India: ₹153 (Share in total monthly expenditure: 2.35%)

Edible Oil

Rural India: ₹113 (Share in total monthly expenditure: 2.92%)

Urban India: ₹138 (Share in total monthly expenditure: 2.11%)

Rural India: ₹363 (Share in total monthly expenditure: 9.41%)
