The latest study by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) reveals that the per capita monthly household expenditure has more than doubled in 2022-23 compared to the figures recorded in 2011-12.
NSSO, under Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, conducted Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (HCES) during August 2022 to July 2023. Take a look at rural and urban India’s average spends per month on food.
Rural India: ₹3,860 (53% non-food items, 47% food items)
Urban India: ₹6,521 (60% non-food items, 40% food items)
Rural India: ₹267 (Share in total monthly expenditure: 6.92%)
