Rajasthan held its first Assembly election on 29 February 1952. The state had 160 constituencies at the time.
Around 616 candidates contested for a total of 160 Assembly seats
The Congress won 82 of the 160 seats with 12,86,953 votes, securing 39.46 per cent of the total vote share
Hiralal Shastri became the first chief minister of Rajasthan.
The Akhil Bharatiya Ram Rajya Parishad (RRP) finished second with 3,99,958 votes, with a 12.26 per cent vote share.
The then Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS) bagged eight seats, securing 5.93 per cent of the overall vote share.
As many as 35 seats were won by Independents, getting 35.35 per cent of the vote share.
Over 32,00,000 voters, or 35.19 per cent of the total electorate of 92,68,215, polled in the state’s first-ever election.
Other contesting parties such as Socialist Party, the Krishikar Lok Party, the Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha, and the Kisan Mazdoor Praja Party, also secured a few seats.
