Troubleshooting Aadhaar-PAN linking: Income Tax Department offers solutions

Published by: Vivek Dubey

If you have not linked your Aadhaar and PAN yet, you may want to hurry up as the deadline is approaching fast.

Here are some important points to know about the linking process and how to resolve any issues that may arise:

The deadline to link Aadhaar and PAN is June 30, 2023.

Customers who fail to do so will have to pay a fine of Rs 1,000 and their PAN will become invalid from July 1, 2023.

Some customers may face demographic mismatch

such as name, date of birth, gender etc in their PAN and Aadhaar cards, which can prevent them from linking the two online.

The Income Tax Department has shared ways to resolve this failure.

It said that biometric-based authentication can be availed of at dedicated centres of PAN Service Providers (Protean & UTIITSL).

The link failure may occur due to name mismatch.

Customers can update their PAN details by visiting the Protean website or the UTIITSL website. They can update their Aadhaar details by visiting the UIDAI website.

The link failure may occur due to date of birth mismatch.

Customers can follow the same steps as above to update their PAN and Aadhaar details.

The link failure may occur due to gender mismatch.

Customers can follow the same steps as above to update their PAN and Aadhaar details.

After the demographic mismatch is resolved, customers can try linking PAN-Aadhaar online

at the e-filing portal. They can also check the status of their linking request at the same portal.

If the linking request still fails, customers can avail biometric-based authentication

by paying a nominal charge of Rs 50 at dedicated centres of PAN Service Providers. They can find the details of these centres on the websites of the service providers.

Some customers are exempt from linking Aadhaar-PAN.

These include individuals residing in Assam, Jammu and Kashmir and Meghalaya; non-residents as per the Income-tax Act, 1961; individuals aged 80 years or more; and individuals who are not citizens of India.

Customers can link Aadhaar-PAN by paying a fine of Rs 1,000

on the NSDL portal by using Challan No. ITNS 280 with Major head 0021 (Income Tax Other than Companies) and Minor head 500 (Other Receipts).
